The story so far

The Lakers won 53 games, took the 4 seed, and got swept out of the playoffs by Oklahoma City. Then the real season started. LeBron James declined to re-sign after 23 years. Deandre Ayton was traded to Washington for a bench guard and picks. In one 35-minute stretch of free agency, the front office signed four new players — a center coming off shoulder surgery, a 3&D wing coming off the worst shooting year of his career, a bench bucket-getter, and a stretch big off a career season.

Every one of those bets rides on one player: Luka Dončić, who just led the NBA in usage and scoring. The roster isn't finished — two spots are still open and the rumor mill is loud. So this page does what the hot-take machine won't: it scores every arrival, every returnee, and every affordable name still on the market against Luka's measurable needs, with the assumptions on the table and the receipts one scroll away.

The whole thesis

Usage rate is the share of team possessions a player ends — a shot, free throws, or a turnover. It's the cleanest measurable answer to "who has the ball?" Luka ends more possessions than anyone alive, so every teammate's fit starts with one question: can you be great without it?

One composite number implies a verdict the data can't back. Four axes stay four axes. If you want a single number, this is the wrong tool on purpose.

Spacing (3P% + volume), play finishing (TS% without the ball), defensive cover (who guards so Luka doesn't), and ball-need — inverted: lower usage scores higher next to the league's highest-usage player.

Sample size, team context, and injury status sit next to every score, not in a footnote. Tags changed the verdict on 2 of the first 4 players scored.

The Luka rest problem

Season usage blends minutes next to Luka with minutes while he rests — opposite signals. Fix: with/without splits. Applying it softened the tool's own loudest take (see Reaves).

UPGRADED

Defense, second pass

Cover scores originally leaned on steals, blocks, and reputation. They're now rescored on individual defensive rating — points allowed per 100 possessions on court — pulled for all 14 scored players. Still box-derived and team-flavored; the tracking-data tier stays stubbed and the skeleton stays visible.

LENS

Fit and need never merge

Fit asks "does his game complement Luka." Need asks "does this roster have room for his body type" — with 7 guards, 3 forwards, and 1.5 healthy centers, need is countable, not a vibe. Two lenses, shown separately.

Pattern found
Roster construction, not one player
Three guards over 24 season usage (Reaves 26.6, Sexton 25.9, Hardy 24.5) orbiting a 38.0 usage franchise player. Staggering absorbs it in the regular season. Rotations shrink in the playoffs — that's when the overlap gets real. Vanderbilt and LaRavia are the only low-usage rotation glue on the roster.
Verdict: the glue is real, the guard math isn't.And the tool publicly corrected itself on Reaves — the with/without split turned its loudest take into its best finding.

Avoid list (the axes say no): Jordan Clarkson (would be the fourth 24+ USG guard), Russell Westbrook (high usage, no spacing), Bradley Beal (hip fracture, missed nearly all of 25-26).   Above the minimum: LeBron James, James Harden, Jalen Duren, Jonathan Kuminga, and Bennedict Mathurin remain unsigned but are not vet-minimum targets.

About this project

The Luka Fit Index is a for-fun analytics experiment built in one brainstorming session: a bias-visibility tool disguised as a sports dashboard. The interesting part was never the scores — it's that the assumptions are printed on the page, and the tool corrected itself twice when the data disagreed with its takes.

Built PRD-first with a multi-LLM workflow. Deterministic structure, labeled interpretation, receipts kept in a spike file the whole way.
